Every language teacher wants his or her students to use language outside of class, so why not start with Facebook! Nearly every teen uses this site nearly every day! Thus our Spanish teacher, Anne Goorhuis, is teaching PTA students the key terms of Facebook in Spanish. Students answer roll call in class by responding with one of the terms here shown. For students to feel comfortable using Facebook in Spanish they need to be able to switch back to English when they hit a trouble spot, which means knowing Settings/Configuración and Language/Idioma is very important!
Here’s a comical note. When students were asked to change their FB language to Spanish as a homework assignment, Mrs. Goorhuis asked them to take a screen shot of their homepage and hand in a print-out of it. One student challenged, “By that’s a waste of paper! Why can’t we just submit the image to you via email?” Mrs. Goorhuis agreed that would be workable. The rubber met the road the next day, when this very student, this very techy student, had not submitted his email with the image. “¿Qué pasó?” queried Mrs. Goorhuis. The student replied, “Oh, it’s the end the month of my data plan and I ran out of data just as I was sending it to you.” ¿Cómo se dice, “The dog ate my homework,” en español?
